The Port of Tokyo processed 2.42 million TEUs of containers in the first half (January-June),up 6.5% year on year, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’s Bureau of Port and Harbor.
As for oceangoing containers, 940,000 TEUs were exported, up 2.6%, and 1.18 million TEUs were imported, up 7.1%, for a total of 2.12 million TEUs, up 5%, while domestic containers totaled 300,000 TEUs, up 18.3%.
Looking at international cargo in terms of volume, exports decreased 5.2% to 5.26 million tons as those to the U.S., Taiwan and elsewhere diminished. On the other hand, imports hiked 5.4% to 17.48 million tons due to growth in those from China, Vietnam and other sources. Overall throughput was, as such, 22.74 million tons, up 2.8%.
As for domestic cargo, 7.06 million tons were shipped out, which swelled 3% as heavy oil and other commodities increased, and 11.74 million tons were shipped in, which slid 0.7% owing to contractions in gravel and sand, cement and others. Domestic cargo totaled 18.81 million tons, up 0.6%.
The number of ships calling Tokyo was 10,129, down 3.6%, which weighed 75.49 million gross tons, down 3.1%.
