Oceangoing Containers to/from Japan’s Big 6 Ports Increase 8.9% to 1.15 Mil. TEUs in Aug.
Japan’s six major ports handled a combined 1.15 million TEUs of oceangoing containers in August, up 8.9% year on year, the first increase in two months, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the nation’s transport ministry. Exports and imports both grew, up 9.5% to 558,278 TEUs and 8.3% to 590,296 TEUs, respectively.

Individually, Tokyo handled 357,833 TEUs, up 4.9%, which consisted of 155,169 TEUs of exports, up 3.5%, and 202,664 TEUs of imports, up 6%. Throughput jumped 32.6% to 7,427 TEUs at Kawasaki, where exports swelled 77% to 3,788 TEUs, while imports climbed 5.1% to 3,639 TEUs. Yokohama was responsible for 233,271 TEUs, up 8.3%, exporting 125,083 TEUs, up 10.4%, and importing 108,188 TEUs, up 5.9%. Containers to and from Nagoya amounted to 220,153 TEUs, up 10.6%, of which 109,357 TEUs were exported, up 8%, and 110,796 TEUs were imported, up 13.4%. Osaka processed 161,908 TEUs, up 12.5%, comprising 73,332 TEUs of exports, up 15.9%, and 88,576 TEUs of imports, up 9.9%. Kobe exported 91,549 TEUs, up 15%, and imported 76,433 TEUs, up 9.1%, for a total of 167,982 TEUs, up 12.2%.
