Operations remained stable at major Chinese ports but slowed at U.S. and European ports in June, according to operational efficiency at the world’s top 20 container ports (based on 2022 throughput) unveiled by the Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE).
Nine Chinese ports recorded an average port stay of 1.51 days and an average berthing time of 0.85 days in June, which increased 6.3% and 1.2% year on year, although containers were shipped en masse due to U.S. tariffs. In the first half, the averages were 1.5 days and 0.87 days, up 4% and 0.5%, respectively, showing that port operations were generally stable.
Meanwhile, the other 11 major ports reported an average port stay of 2.4 days and an average berthing time of 1.82 days in June. In Europe, high temperatures decreased water levels in rivers, adversely impacting logistics and disrupting some ports. The average port stays rose 2.7% year on year to 2.27 days at Rotterdam and a more notable 38.7% to 2.65 days at Antwerp, which, however, went down 1.5% from May. In the U.S., the average port stays rose 5.3% to 4.17 days at Los Angeles and 32.5% to 4.73 days at Long Beach.
The Taiwanese port of Kaohsiung registered the shortest average port stay of 0.86 days in June, down 7% from the previous month, followed by Hong Kong at 0.9 days, down 12.5%, and Guangzhou at 0,98 days, unchanged.
