Container exports from Asia to Europe amounted to 1.5 million TEUs in October, up 18.2% for their first year-on-year growth in two months, according to statistics compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) from data provided by Container Trades Statistics (CTS). In the first 10 months (January-October), Asia exported 14.89 million TEUs to Europe, up 7.8%.
By origin, exports from China and Hong Kong totaled 1.17 million TEUs in October, up 23.5%. Those from Southeast Asia were also brisk, surging 11.9% to 205,921 TEUs. In contrast, containers from other Northeast Asian economies shrank 9.9% to 125,389 TEUs.
By destination, Asia’s container exports increased across the board in October. Those to North Europe went up 19.9% to 939,407 TEUs; to the Western Mediterranean, up 20.1% to 278,104 TEUs; and to the Eastern Mediterranean, up 11.2% to 285,146 TEUs.
Meanwhile, container imports from Europe to Asia fell 11.2% to 517,000 TEUs in October, incurring a year-on-year contraction for the second consecutive month, and 2% to 5.24 million TEUs in January-October.
In October, imports declined from all regions of origin, with those from North Europe waning 8.2% to 3.64 million TEUs; from the Western Mediterranean, 11.7% to 80,581 TEUs; and from the Eastern Mediterranean, 23.4% to 71,553 TEUs.
By destination, imports to China plunged 17.6% to 240,511 TEUs in October, contributing to the shrinkage on the entire incoming route, while those from Southeast Asia were sluggish, too, sliding 9.4% to 156,662 TEUs. On the other hand, containers from other Northeast Asian economies improved 2.1% to 119,821 TEUs.
