U.S. container exports from Japan totaled 53,114 TEUs in November (based on volumes at ports of origin), up 4.7% from the same month of 2023 for two back-to-back months of year-on-year growth, Descartes Datamyne announced yesterday. Containers moved directly amounted to 37,106 TEUs, up 7.6%, and those transshipped on the way, 16,008 TEUs, down 1.4%. The latter accounted for 30.1% of the total, down by two percentage points.

South Korea was responsible for 10,682 TEUs of transshipment (T/S) containers, down 4.9%; Taiwan, 2,313 TEUs, up 38.8%; and China, 1,763 TEUs, down 13.2%. Of the containers via South Korea, 4,230 TEUs were destined to four East Coast states, which accounted for 39.6% of the total, down by eight percentage points.

Descartes Datamyne unveiled at the same time that the U.S. exported 47,374 TEUs of containers to Japan in October (based on volumes at ports of destination), down 2.3%, of which 35,149 TEUs were transported directly between the nations, down 8%, and 12,225 TEUs were transshipped in third countries and regions, up 18.9%.

Containers carried by way of South Korea plunged 43.8% to 3,372 TEUs, while those through Panama skyrocketed 12,404.5% to 2,751 TEUs. Those moved via Canada jumped from zero to 1,972 TEUs due to a notable increase at Prince Rupert. Containers transshipped in China ballooned 134.9% to 975 TEUs, while those moved via Taiwan plummeted 67.6% to 822 TEUs.
