Japan’s six major ports handled a total of 1.05 million TEUs of oceangoing containers in August, which shrank 3% from a year earlier, their first year-on-year contraction in five months, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the nation’s transport ministry. Exports accounted for 507,018 TEUs, down 2.1%, and imports, 543,610 TEUs, down 3.8%.
Tokyo processed 341,019 TEUs, up 3.8%, exporting 149,919 TEUs, up 4.2%,and importing 191,100 TEUs, up 3.4%. Throughput plunged 26.1% to 5,615 TEUs at Kawasaki, a double-digit decrease for the second consecutive month, of which 2,152 TEUs were exported, down 39.8%, and 3,463 TEUs imported, down 14%. Yokohama was responsible for 213,900 TEUs, down 1.4%, consisting of 112,238 TEUs of exports, up 0.6%, and 101,662 TEUs of imports, down 3.5%. Containers to and from Nagoya declined 1.6% to 199,040 TEUs, comprising 101,301 TEUs of exports, unchanged, and 97,739 TEUs of imports, down 3.2%. Container throughput plummeted at Osaka, too, going down 11.7% to 141,558 TEUs, of which 61,885 TEUs were exported, down 14%, and 79,673 TEUs were imported, down 9.9%. Kobe did not perform well, either, processing 149,496 TEUs, down 10.5%, exporting 79,523 TEUs, down 6.9%, and importing 69,973 TEUs, down 14.3%.
