Container exports from Asia to Europe amounted to 1.63 million TEUs in August, up 14.5% compared to the corresponding month of 2023, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC), which has compiled statistics provided by the U.K.’s Container Trades Statistics (CTS). Consumer goods from China, such as furniture, bedclothes, apparel products and electrical appliances, remained robust, helping Asia’s Europe-bound containers accomplish a year-on-year increase for the 18th consecutive month. Exceeding 1.61 million TEUs in January 2019, they hit a new monthly record.
In the first eight months (January-August), Asia exported 11.97 million TEUs to Europe, up 7.7%.
By region of origin, China and Hong Kong exported 1.29 million TEUs in August, up 17.1%; other Northeast Asian economies, 130,493 ETUs, down 6.5%; and Southeast Asia, 217,756 TEUs, up 14.5%.
By region of destination, 1.06 million TEUs were destined to North Europe, up 19.2%; 288,806 TEUs to the Western Mediterranean, up 14.4%; and 286,967 TEUs to the Eastern Mediterranean, which levelled off.
Container imports from Europe to Asia aggregated 501,885 TEUs in August, down 0.6%, which was a year-on-year contraction for the second month in a row. In January-August, they totaled 4.23 million TEUs, up 0.3%.
By origin, 347,148 TEUs were from North Europe in August, down 2.5%; 81,697 TEUs from the Western Mediterranean, up 10.1%; and 73,040 TEUs from the Eastern Mediterranean, down 2.5%.
By destination, China imported 236,790 TEUs, down 6.6%; other Northeast Asian economies, 114,740 TEUs, up 10.1%; and Southeast Asia, 150,348 TEUs, up 2%.
