The city of Yokohama has concluded a cooperation agreement with PowerX to develop a carbon-neutral port in Yokohama by using battery tankers and storage batteries.

The city of Yokohama will now discuss the provision of infrastructure for next-generation energy with the use of the battery tankers that PowerX, a Tokyo-based energy venture company, will develop. Battery tankers will be the world’s first way to send electricity, in which electricity is carried by sea as stored in onboard batteries.

Today, cables are a common way to transmit electrical power, but battery tankers can supplement it. When more than one such tankers are in operation, they can keep electricity from breaking up. They can also smoothly send electricity both between offshore plants and inland facilities and between inland bases.
