Container exports to the U.S. from 18 Asian countries and regions plunged 15.2% to 1,410,464 TEUs in December, registering a year-on-year contraction for the fourth month in a row, according to statistics compiled by the Japan Maritime Center with the Journal of Commerce (JOC)'s Port Import/Export Reporting Service (PIERS) data.

Looking at volumes at port of origin in Asia, China was responsible for 768,929 TEUs, down 23.6%; South Korea, 87,471 TEUs, up 0.9%; Japan, 58,749 TEUs, up 51.5%; and Taiwan, 55,563 TEUs, down 11.3%.

In 2022, 21,116,101 TEUs were moved on the route, up 1.1% from the previous year, which was a new record thanks to growth in advanced exports in the first half.

By origin, China shipped 11,940,722 TEUs, down 2.4%; South Korea, 1,194,314 TEUs, up 9.6%; Taiwan, 778,202 TEUs, down 5%; and Japan, 656,929 TEUs, down 14.8%. From Southeast Asia, 4,955,798 TEUs were exported, up 8.9%. Containers from Vietnam accounted for 2,508,543 TEUs, up 7.8%; from Thailand, 931,840 TEUs, up 10.4%; and from Indonesia, 551,569 TEUs, up 14.2%.
