The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)'s Bureau of Port and Harbor and Tokyo Port Terminal Corporation (TPTC) will on July 1 introduce renewable energy-based virtually CO2-free electricity at the Port of Tokyo's Shinagawa and Outer Central Breakwater container terminals. It is estimated that a total of 12.43 million kilowatt-hour of renewable power will be consumed a year at the container terminals. It is also expected that consequently, some 6,000 tons of CO2 will be reduced a year, which could be emitted from approximately 2,100 common households.

To develop carbon-neutral ports (CNPs), the TMG has set up a dedicated review board with port and harbor operators, enterprises having knowledge of decarbonization and other parties. The board is now working on a plan to develop CNPs at the Port of Tokyo, which is a roadmap to decarbonization. To realize decarbonization, renewable energy-based electrical power will be introduced in series at the container terminals that TPTC operates.
