A new container railway service has been commenced between northern Sweden and the Port of Gothenburg. It links Umea, which is rapidly growing with massive exports and the briskness of local energy industry, with Gothenburg. The first train, which is capable of carrying 68 containers, left Gothenburg for Umea on May 27, was loaded with containers in Umea on May 28 and returned to Gothenburg on May 29. The new service will be operated weekly in two directions for the time being but is expected to upgrade this summer into a more frequent service. Now, a total of 45 services are provided between Gothenburg and 12 cities in northern Sweden.
