Ship It Zero has sent an open letter to shipping companies to tell them to stop ordering ships running on fossil fuel and invest in zero-emission technologies and fuel. The shipping companies include A.P. Moller-Maersk of Denmark, CMA CGM of France, Evergreen Marine of Taiwan, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) of Switzerland and Ocean Network Express (ONE).

The five carriers emit the largest amount of environmental pollutants in maritime transport to the U.S., according to the letter, which adds that they were responsible for at least 11.99 million tons of CO2 emissions in 2018-2020. Ship It Zero, a coalition of parties from several fields of business urging the world's largest retailers to commit to zero-emission shipping, suggested that they only construct newbuildings with zero-emission technologies running on zero-emission fuel. The five lines have all reported record-breaking profits over the last two years, it says. “It is your duty to invest these resources in reducing fossil fuel use and catalyzing the shift to zero emissions vessels,” it continues. “Any new investment in fossil fuels by your companies at this time is moral and economic madness.”
