Ports in the Middle East took four of the top five spots in the second edition of the global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) developed by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah Port tops the ranking in 2021, with regional competitors Port Salalah in Oman in second place, Hamad Port in Qatar in third and Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi in fifth. Saudi Arabia's Jeddah Islamic Port also featured strongly in eighth place. Three of the large Chinese gateways, Shanghai (Yangshan), Ningbo and Guangzhou, feature in the top 10, which finished in fourth, seventh and ninth places, respectively. Meanwhile, last year's most efficient port, Yokohama in Japan, dropped to 10th place. As for other Japanese ports, Kobe moved down to 37th place, Nagoya to 43rd, Shimizu to 45th and Tokyo to 51st.
