In 2021, containers were moved in Europe in railway-based intermodal transport 500,000 times, up 8.1% from the previous year, according to the International Union for Road-Rail Combined Transport (UIRR). In terms of volume, they swelled 10.9% to 100.2 billion ton-kilometers. The average non-road distance, meanwhile, remained unchanged at 895 kilometers. The share of intermodal trains exceeds 50% of the total European Rail freight. Container throughput increased 8.1% to 1,020 TEUs.
