The U.S. port of Long Beach in California handled 820,718 TEUs of containers in April, which swelled 10% from the corresponding month of last year and set a new April record.

Imports of loaded containers increased 9.2% to 400,803 TEUs, but exports fell 1.8% to 121,876 TEUs. As for empty containers, 12,895 TEUs were imported, up 11.4%, and 285,145 TEUs were exported, up 17.2%.

The Port of Long Beach anticipates that container imports will grow further through the peak season in summer in step with the lifting of China’s COVID-19 lockdowns. As the retailing business is staying flat in the U.S., it also projects that consumption trends will shift more vividly from goods to services.
