The U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has made it mandatory for the three leading shipping alliances - the 2M Alliance, the Ocean Alliance and THE Alliance - and their member lines to provide freight rate and cargo capacity information.

To keep an eye on containership operators’ behaviors, market competitiveness and compliance statuses to judge if the compliance agreements that they conclude have anti-competitive impacts on markets, the federal agency now insists on receiving uniform data to obtain enhanced information. The member carriers of the alliances, for their part, need to submit information on freight rates on major trade routes. The alliances and their members are both demanded to supply comprehensive information on capacity management.
