Freight movement indexes were positive in the first quarter (January-March) of 2022 for exports and imports of oceangoing containers as well as exports of international airborne shipments, but negative for imports of international airborne shipments, according to NX Logistics Research Institute and Consulting, Inc. The think tank held a press conference on April 28 to detail a survey that it conducted in March on short-term freight movement. It anticipates a negative index for airfreight imports for the second quarter (April-June) but positive indexes for the other sectors.

From the previous period (October-December 2021), however, the indexes all declined in January-March. NX Logistics Research Institute and Consulting foresees that in April-June, they will improve for exports of oceangoing containers and international airfreight, stayed flat for imports of oceangoing containers and drop for imports of international airfreight.

The survey was conducted in March among 2,500 major manufacturers and wholesalers, 753 of which answered questions. Freight movement indexes are calculated by subtracting the percentage of business operators answering the indexes go down from those saying they go up.
