Containerized exports from Japan to China surged 14.8% to 778,379 tons in February, marking the first year-on-year improvement in 10 months, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). In terms of value, they swelled a more notable 28.9% to ¥817 billion, registering the first year-on-year increase in two months.

In contrast, imports from China to Japan shrank 11.9% to 1,420,310 tons, suffering the first year-on-year contraction in 10 months, the JMC has said, referring to trade statistics provided by the Ministry of Finance (MOF). In yen terms, however, they rose 4% to ¥1.063 trillion, remaining on the rise for nine months in a row.

From the beginning of the year, outbound containers waned 4.8% in volume to 1.27 million tons but picked up 10% in value to ¥1.383 trillion in January-February. Inbound containers, meanwhile, weighed 3,417,000 tons, up 3.1%, and were valued at ¥2.502 trillion, up 16.9%.
