Chinese ports processed a total of 23.79 million TEUs of containers in March, which increased 1.4% from the same month of last year, according to statistics compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT). Throughput only grew slightly at both coastal and inland river ports, which went up 1.6% to 20.65 million TEUs and 0.4% to 2.82 million TEUs, respectively.

In the first three months, 67.38 million TEUs were moved to and from China in total, which improved 2.4% from the January-March of 2021. Coastal ports were responsible for 59.83 million TEUs, up 2.5%, and inland river ports, 7.55 million TEUs, up 1.7%.

Looking at the three busiest ports in January-March, Shanghai handled 12.26 million TEUs, up 8.1%, reaching the top spot. Containers to and from Ningbo-Zhoushan swelled 2.6% to 7.91 million TEUs, helping the neighboring ports finish in second place. Ranked third was Shenzhen, but shipments to and from it plunged 10.1% to 6.49 million TEUs. Guangzhou, which came in fifth place, did not performed very well, either, processing 5.48 million TEUs, down 1.2%.
