U.K.'s HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is closing the Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system on March 31, 2023. The Customs Declaration Service (CDS) is replacing it as the UK's single customs platform for all declarations and all goods.

Ahead of the complete closure, HMRC will withdraw services in two stages:
・Effective September 30, 2022: the ability to make import declarations on CHIEF will end.
・Effective March 31, 2023, the ability to make export declarations on CHIEF and the National Export System (NES) will end.

Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF), which is a part of HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), records the movement of goods by land, air and sea and allows importers, exporters and freight forwarders to complete customs formalities electronically and automatically checks for entry errors.
