Outbound containers from Japan to the U.S. jumped 42.3% to 45,327 TEUs in February, accomplishing a year-on-year increase for two back-to-back months, Descartes Datamyne recently announced. From the same month of 2020, however, they still decreased 8.7%, indicating they have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels, the U.S. research company added.

Containers that transshipped in third countries and regions amounted to 17,244 TEUs, up 72.2%, accounting for 38% of the total. South Korea was responsible for 10,931 TEUs, up 54%, while 2,126 TEUs were transshipped in China, up 52%. Meanwhile, those moved via transshipment in Taiwan almost quintupled, growing 397.3% to 1,855 TEUs.

Looking at direct exports to the U.S. by origin in Japan, 12,942 TEUs were from Tokyo, down 30.8%; 9,098 TEUs from Kobe, down 29.1%; 5,439 TEUs from Yokohama, down 35.2%; and 4,243 TEUs from Nagoya, down 17.4%.
