The total volume of containerized shipments handled at South Korean trade ports in 2021 amounted to 30 million TEUs, which was greater by 3.1% than 29.1 million TEUs in the previous year and by 2.6% than 29.32 million TEUs in the pre-pandemic year of 2019, according to the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF).

In breakdown, exports accounted for 8.55 million TEUs, up 3.2%; imports, 8.58 million TEUs, up 5.4%; and transshipment (T/S) containers, 12.86 million TEUs, up 1.5%.

As for volumes at major ports, Busan was responsible for 22.69 million TEUs, up 4%, which consisted of 10.43 million TEUs of exports and imports, up 6.4%, and 12.26 million TEUs of T/S containers, up 2%.

Incheon processed 3.35 million TEUs, up 2.5%. Exports and imports swelled 3.1% to 3.29 million TEUs due to briskness in those to and from China and Vietnam. In contrast, T/S containers plunged 21.8% to 54,000 TEUs.

At Kwangyang, container throughput fell 1.6% to 2.12 million TEUs. Exports and imports managed to level off at 1.79 million TEUs, but T/S containers sank 10.8% to 330,000 TEUs.
