Chinese ports handled a total of 24.28 million TEUs of containers in September, down 1% from the same month of last year, according to preliminary port and harbor statistics compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT). Throughput increased 0.7% to 21.45 million TEUs at coastal ports but decreased 2.7% to 2.84 million TEUs at inland river ports, which had a decisive impact on the decline in the total.

In the January-to-September term, 210.96 million TEUs were carried to and from China in total, up 9.5% year on year. Volumes were favorable at both coastal and inland river ports, which grew 8.9% to 186.37 million TEUs and 14.8% to 24.59 million TEUs, respectively.
