Container exports to the U.S. from 10 major Asian countries and regions swelled 9.4% to 1,829,030 TEUs in August, American research company Descartes Datamyne has announced. The trade enjoyed a year-on-year improvement for the 14th month in a row and marked a new record for the month in question. In the first eight months (January-August), 13,562,750 TEUs were traded on the route, up 30.2%.

Looking at containers shipped out of Asia in August by origin, those from China increased 0.6% to 1,072,944 TEUs, while those from Vietnam surged 16% to 181,328 TEUs. South Korea was responsible for 168,875 TEUs, up 34.3%. Exports from Taiwan soared 31.6% to 91,005 TEUs. Containers from Japan hiked 10% to 36,536 TEUs, finishing in ninth place.

Meanwhile, imports from the U.S. to the 10 Asia economies shrank 11.4% from a year earlier to 428,631 TEUs in July. From the beginning of the year, they totaled 3,471,837 TEUs, up 0.6%.

By destination, containers to China plunged 31.6% to 123,813 TEUs but managed to account for the greatest part of the total throughput. In contrast, those to Japan climbed 1.2% to 52,542 TEUs. Imports to South Korea declined 7.5% to 45,163 TEUs. India imported 40,208 TEUs, up 50.2%, and Vietnam, 36,446 TEUs, down 10.7%.
