Spot rates for container exports from the Chinese port of Shanghai continued to hike on major trade routes in Week 35, the Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE) has unveiled.

Transport demand remained high on the route to Europe, where spot rates improved 1.1% from the previous week to $7,443 per TEU. Those for containers bound for the Mediterranean, meanwhile, stood at $7,289 per TEU, up 2.3%.

Transport demand continued to rise on the trade to North America, too. In addition, there was no sign of improvement in container retention, lowering truck utilization rates and port congestion. Consequently, rates for shipments destined to the east coast picked up 4.6% to $11,648 per FEU and to the west coast, 5.3% to $6,266 per TEU.

On north-south routes, spot rates increased across the board. They climbed 1.7% to $3,830 per TEU for exports to the Middle East Gulf, 4.8% to $4,154 per TEU for those to Australia and New Zealand and 0.1% to $10,012 per TEU for those to South America.

Container exports to Japan were moved at a rate of $281 per TEU to Kansai and $282 per TEU to Kanto, both of which rose 0.4%.
