The overall volume of containerized shipments processed in Japan in 2020 diminished 7.3% from the previous year to 21.66 million TEUs, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT)’s Ports and Harbors Bureau. Those to and from overseas accounted for 17.39 million TEUs, down 7.7%, while those carried among domestic ports amounted to 4.26 million TEUs, down 5.9%. Looking more closely at foreign-trade containers, 8.7 million TEUs were exported, down 7.9%, and 8.69 million TEUs were imported, down 7.5%.

The top five ports handling oceangoing containers were as follows. Tokyo was responsible for 4.26 million TEUs and held the largest share of the pie; Yokohama, 2.412 million TEUs; Nagoya, 2.302 million TEUs; Osaka, 2.059 million TEUs; and Kobe, 2.04 million TEUs.
