A total of 283,600 TEUs of containers were traded between South Korea and Japan in the first two months (January-February) of 2021, which improved 1% from the 281,400 TEUs moved on the route a year earlier, according to the Korea Nearsea Freight Conference (KNFC).

Of the total, exports from South Korea to Japan shrank 4% to 54,300 TEUs, while imports from Japan to South Korea grew 9% to 49,800 TEUs. Transshipment (T/S) containers increased marginally by 0.1% to 179,500 TEUs.

The boycott of Japanese products in South Korea resulting from the trade dispute between the two economies had subsided, helping imports of beer and others from Japan increase. Owing to such trends, incoming shipments to South Korea were brisk, enabling its trade with Japan pull out of the severe stagnation that it stepped into in 2020.
