South Korea’s trade ports handled a total of 7.29 million TEUs of containers in the first quarter (January-March) of 2021, up 1.3% year on year from 7.19 million TEUs, according to statistics compiled by the country’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF).

International-trade shipments accounted for 4.24 million TEUs, up 4.5%. Exports and imports were both robust, growing 3.9% to 2.12 million TEUs and 5.2% to 2.12 million TEUs, respectively. In contrast, transhipment (T/S) containers decreased 2.8% to 3.08 million TEUs.

As for volumes at major ports, Busan processed 5.524 million TEUs, down 0.1%. Exports and imports totaled 2.612 million TEUs, up 1.7%, but containers transhipped at the port shrank 1.7% to 2.912 million TEUs.

Incheon was responsible for 827,000 TEUs, up 18.2%. Double-digit improvements were marked for both oceangoing and T/S containers, with the former surging 16.8% to 804,000 TEUs and the latter, 33.3% to 21,000 TEUs.

At Kwangyang, however, throughput plunged 10.3% to 499,000 TEUs. Exports and imports only declined a mild 1.9% to a total of 444,000 TEUs, but those transhipped plummeted 46.7% to 55,000 TEUs due to service realignments by shipping alliances.
