The combined volume of oceangoing containerized shipments handled in January at Japan’s six major ports (Tokyo, Kawasaki, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe) decreased 3.4% year on year to 1,052,668 TEUs, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). Exports improved 2.6% to 503,965 TEUs, but imports fell 8.3% to 548,703 TEUs.

Individually, container throughput at Tokyo accounted for the largest part, but quantitatively, it shrank 8.5% to 330,822 TEUs in total. Tokyo was followed by Yokohama, which was responsible for 190,380 TEUs, up 2.2%. Nagoya took third place, processing 190,208 TEUs, down 4.8%. At for the remaining ports, containers to and from Osaka grew 0.6% to 169,498 TEUs; in contrast, those to and from Kobe waned 2.1% to 158,880 TEUs. Kawasaki enjoyed a double-digit rise of 16.9% by handling 128,800 TEUs.
