In January, 655,517 tons of containerized shipments were traded from Japan to China, which swelled 23.5% from a year earlier and enjoyed a year-on-year improvement for seven months in a row, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). They were valued at ¥623.9 billion, which surged 35.9%, increasing year on year for two back-to-back months.

Imports from China to Japan, on the other hand, plunged 15.9% to 1,701,125 tons, suffering a year-on-year contraction for the ninth consecutive month, the JMC said, referring to trade statistics provided by the Ministry of Finance (MOF). In terms of value, they shrank 12.4% to ¥1.112 trillion, which registered their first year-on-year decrease in two months.
