Combined volume of shipments processed at ports in China amounted to 1.29 billion tons in January, surging a notable 17.4% from a year earlier, according to statistics compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT). Containers totaled 23.77 million TEUs, which improved 13.2%.

Looking at container throughput more precisely, coastal ports were responsible for 21.15 million TEUs, up 12.5%, while inland river ports performed even better, handling 2.62 million TEUs in total, up 19.8%. There were several factors behind the favorable figures, such as growth in cargo consignment before the Lunar New Year holidays in February. In January 2020, cargo and container volumes both shrank from a year earlier due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but in January this year, they both came back.
