Japan's six major ports (Tokyo, Kawasaki, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe) handled a total of 1,176,748 TEUs of containers in December 2020, down 2.2% from a year earlier, according to preliminary port and harbor statistics unveiled by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). Exports decreased 4.9% to 601,707 TEUs, but imports turned to positive growth, although it was minute, swelling 0.8% to 575,041 TEUs.

Tokyo performed better than any other, processing 366,859 TEUs in total, down 6%, which consisted of 174,178 TEUs of outbound containers, down 11.9%, and 192,681 TEUs of inbound containers, unchanged. As for volumes at the other ports, containers to and from Yokohama amounted to 216,676 TEUs, down 0.9%, of which 114,954 TEUs were exported, down 5.9%, and 101,722 TEUs imported, up 5.3%. Nagoya was responsible for 213,582 TEUs, down 1.1%. Exports accounted for 115,670 TEUs, down 2.7%, and imports, 97,912 TEUs, up 0.8%. Throughput improved 6% to 191,092 TEUs at Osaka, to which 94,648 TEUs were moved, up 10.4%, and from which, 96,444 TEUs were shipped, up 2%. Kobe exported 97,252 TEUs, down 4.8%, and imported 79,298 TEUs, down 4.6%, for a total of 176,550 TEUs, down 4.7%. Kawasaki handled 11,989 TEUs, down 7.2%, comprising 5,005 TEUs of exports, down 20.6%, and 6,984 TEUs of imports, up 5.5%.
