Container exports from Japan to the U.S. amounted to 49,749 TEUs in January (based on volumes at ports of origin), which improved 5.3% from a year earlier and 6.7% from a month earlier, according to American research company Descartes Datamyne.

Shipments traded directly from Japan to the U.S. accounted for 37,355 TEUs, up 10.2%, while the remaining 12,394 TEUs were transshipped in third countries/regions, down 7.1%, including 8,966 TEUs processed in South Korea, down 1.2%.

Meanwhile, inbound containers from the U.S. to Japan plunged 17.6% year on year to 47,691 TEUs in December 2020 (based on volumes at ports of destination). Those moved directly on the route came to 41,655 TEUs, down 17.1%, and those transshipped in third economies, 6,036 TEUs, down 28.6%.

In full-year total, 682,053 TEUs were imported from the U.S. to Japan in 2020 (based on volumes at ports of destination), down 8.4% from the previous year. Direct shipments to Japan totaled 602,968 TEUs, down 6.6%. By port, Tokyo received 241,293 TEUs, down 5.5%, holding the leading share of the pie. Ranked second was Kobe, which was responsible for 151,987 TEUs, up 0.8%. Handling 74,098 TEUs, down 14.8%, Yokohama came in third place. Imports to Nagoya stood at 62,419 TEUs, down 10.6%, which helped the port finish in fourth. At the bottom of the top five was Hakata, which accepted 12,911 TEUs, down 9.1%.
