Combined volume of containerized shipments handled in November 2020 at the six major ports in Japan (Tokyo, Kawasaki, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe) shrank 7.2% year on year to 1,122,717 TEUs, according to the latest preliminary port and harbor statistics unveiled on Jan. 25 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). The total throughput was made up of 553,248 TEUs of exports, down 9.1%, and 568,469 TEUs of imports, down 5.3%.

In eastern Japan, Tokyo handled 359,255 TEUs of exports and imports, down 8.5%; Kawasaki, 13,242 TEUs, down 1.1%; and Yokohama, 199,875 TEUs, down 13%. In the Chubu region, Nagoya was responsible for 200,608 TEUs, down 7.1%. In Kansai, 183,998 TEUs were moved to and from Osaka, up 3.2%, and 165,739 TEUs to and from Kobe, down 7.9%.
