A total of 22.9 million TEUs of containers were moved to and from China in December 2020, up 6.1% year on year, the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT) announced recently. Coastal ports handled 20.11 million TEUs, up 6.8%, while the remaining 2.79 million TEUs were processed at inland river ports, up 1.8%.

On a full-year scale, 264.3 million TEUs were traded to and from the nation in January-December, up 1.2%. Coastal ports were responsible for 234.3 million TEUs, up 1.5%, and inland river ports, the balance of 3,000 TEUs, down 0.5%.

At a time when novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was devastating the entire world, the Chinese economy recovered ahead of others last year. Container throughput began picking up in the second half (July-December). In the fourth quarter (October-December), overall container lifting grew 8.8% from a year earlier to 71.7 million TEUs.
