Container exports to the U.S. from 10 major countries and regions in Asia increased a notable 27.9% from a year earlier to 1,629,635 TEUs in December 2020, setting a new record for the month in question, according to American research company Descartes Datamyne. Outbound containers from all but Japan improved year on year.

Holding the leading share of the pie, exports from China surged 34.1% to 1,021,832 TEUs, enjoying a year-on-year rise for seven months in a row. China was followed by South Korea, which exported 180,075 TEUs, up 37.8%. Ranked third were those from Vietnam, which grew 16.2% to 121,126 TEUs. Coming in fourth place, containers from Taiwan hiked 1.3% to 78,239 TEUs. At the bottom of the top five were those from Singapore, which jumped 23% to 71,231 TEUs. Exports from japan came in eighth place, shrining 3.3% to 36,756 TEUs.

On a yearly scale, a total of 17,147,889 TEUs were moved on the trade route in 2020, up 4.5% from the previous year. Shipments from China swelled 6.3% to 10,218,690 TEUs, accounting for the largest part. The second largest source was South Korea, which exported 1,824,589 TEUs, up 2.5%. Containers from Vietnam hit the No. 3 spot, surging 17.3% to 1,285,974 TEUs. Those from Taiwan fell 4.4% to 940,889 TEUs but managed to finish in fourth place. Standing at No. 5, exports from Singapore hiked 7% to 783,758 TEUs. Those from Japan suffered a double-digit contraction of 14.3% to amount to 419,093 TEUs, finishing in eighth place.
