Freight rates for exporting containers from China fluctuated at high levels in the ended o January 8 despite a slowdown in transport demand. The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) improved 3.1% from the previous week to 2,870.34 points, the Shanghai Shipping Exchange unveiled on Friday.

As for spot rates from Shanghai to Europe, which exclude terminal handling charges (THCs), those for containers to North Europe hiked 8.8% to $4,452 per TEU. Rates for those to the Mediterranean climbed a more minute 0.3% to $4,298 per TEU.

On the trans-Pacific trade, demand for moving containers remained brisk. They were carried at a rate of $4,750 per FEU to the U.S. east coast, which levelled off from a week earlier, and $4,019 per FEU to the west coast, which rose 0.4%.

On the Middle East Gulf route, the average load factor came close to 100%, making freight rates climb 4.8% to $1,995 per TEU. In contrast, those to Australia and New Zealand fell 0.6% to $2,451 per TEU, although demand continued to be steady.

On the route to South America, demand remained powerful, helping rates pick up 5.6% to $8,631 per TEU.

Demand was stable on the trade to Japan as well. Freight rates stayed flat at $244 per TEU to Kansai and $251 per TEU to Kanto.
