The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) remained bullish in the final week of 2020, hiking 5.3% from the previous week to 2,783.03 points.

As for freight rates for exporting containers from Shanghai to Europe, those to North Europe were moved at $4,091 per TEU, and to the Mediterranean, at $4,286 per TEU, which improved 7.7% and 15.6%, respectively.

The average load factor of container carriers from Shanghai to the U.S. exceeded 95%. As a consequence, fares for shipments destined to the East Coast swelled 3% to $4,729 per FEU. Those for containers bound for the West Coast were also favorable, going up 1.5% to $4,018 per FEU.

Freight rate fluctuated similarly on other trade routes. Those to the Middle East Gulf picked up 9.6% to $1,903 per TEU and those to Australia and New Zealand, 0.2% to $2,465 per TEU. Rates for containers to South America surged 13.8% and exceeded $8,000 to reach $8,173 per TEU.

On the route to Japan, transport demand was steady. Freight rates remained unchanged at $244 per TEU to Kansai and $251 per TEU to Kanto.
