The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) for the week ended on December 18 increased 4.3% from the previous week to 2,411.82 points.

On the China-Europe route, freight rates remained on an upward trend. Spot rates for containers from Shanghai to North Europe improved 6% to $3,124 per TEU. Those for shipments to the Mediterranean grew 4.9% to $3,223 per TEU.

The economic recovery on the trans-Pacific trade was on the decline, but transport demand was still steady. Freight rates for containers destined to the U.S. East and West coasts both rose mildly, going up 1.5% to $4,874 per FEU and 1.2% to $3,900 per FEU, respectively.

On the route to the Middle East Gulf, the average load factor exceeded 95%, helping freight rates remain massive. They hiked 6.7% to $1,517 per TEU. Fares fluctuated at high levels on the trade to Australia and New Zealand, too, climbing 0.3% to $2,438 per TEU.

Demand for moving containers to South America showed no sign of decline. Freight rates inflated 6.5% to $6,256 per TEU.

On the trade to Japan, demand was stable. Rates for containers bound for Kansai, however, went down by $3 to $244 per TEU, but those for Kanto remained unchanged.
