The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) continued upswing in the week ended on September 13, with its comprehensive index soaring another 11.6% or 192.77 points to 1857.33 on the back of strong demand and tightening capacity.

Container spot rates on the trade from Shanghai to North Europe spiked 21.0% to $1,508 per TEU, and for Mediterranean ports up 22.9% to $1,674 per TEU.

On the Transpacific trade, the SCFI component for the U.S. west coast inched up 0.4% to $3,887 per 40ft. For the U.S. east coast, the rates registered a slight 0.2% gain to $4,676 per 40ft.

Freight rates to the Middle East Gulf region climbed 3.7% to $1,267 per TEU. Those to Australia and New Zealand achieved a stable 5.2% increase to $1,360 per TEU.

To South America, demand for medical products and daily necessities continued to boost transportation demand, lifting spot rates by 4.5% to $4.294 per TEU.

Freight rates for shipments destined to Japan registered a modest 2% increase on both Kansai and Kanto routes, to $249 per TEU and $255 per TEU, respectively.
