Korea exported and imported a total of 325,900 TEUs of containers to and from Southeast Asia in September, which swelled 1% from 323,200 TEUs. In 2020, container movement on the trade enjoyed year-on-year growth for two back-to-back months in February and March but incurred negative growth for five consecutive months from April. In September, it came back mildly to turn upward.

By trade partner, containers to and from Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore increased from a year earlier. They went up 5% to 105,300 TEUs, 10% to 42,200 TEUs, 2% to 33,300 TEUs, 14% to 27,900 TEUs and 4% to 20,000 TEUs, respectively. In contrast, those to and from Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines did not. It fell 9% to 40,200 TEUs, 12% to 36,500 TEUs and 8% to 20,200 TEUs, respectively.

On the route to Russia, meanwhile, 16,120 TEUs were exported from South Korea in September, which improved mildly from a year earlier. On weekly average, those to Vostochny swelled 3.3% to 1,710 TEUs and to Vladivostok, 0.6% to 2,320 TEUs. It is expected that container trade between the two nations will remain on an upward trend in October.
