Loaded and empty oceangoing containers processed at the Port of Tokyo in the first half (January-June) of 2020 shrank 3.3% from a year earlier to 2.13 million TEUs, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’s Bureau of Port and Harbor. In respect to loaded containers, 423,036 TEUs were exported, down 6.1%, and 1,120,041 TEUs were imported, down 4%, for a total of 1,543,077 TEUs, down 4.6%. Empties totaled 585,707 TEUs, up 0.3%.

Looking at exports by destination on a tonnage scale, those to the U.S. weighed 1.28 million tons, down 14.6%; to China, 1.24 million tons, down 19.4%; to Vietnam, 520,000 tons, up 63.2%; to Thailand, 410,000 tons, up 0.3%; and to Taiwan, 360,000 tons, up 29.5%. As for imports, 6.95 million tons were imported from China, down 4.4%; 2.06 million tons from the U.S., up 2.7%; 1.08 million tons from Thailand, down 6.8%; and 1.04 million tons from Vietnam, down 1.1%.
