Japan’s six major container ports (Tokyo, Kawasaki, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe) handled a total of 1,102,908 TEUs of oceangoing containers in July, which suffered a double-digit contraction of 12.8% year on year, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). Double-digit decreases were registered for both exports and imports, too, which plunged 13.1% to 543,025 TEUs and 12.5% to 559,883 TEUs, respectively.

Tokyo managed to enjoy the leading share of the pie, but in terms of volume, container throughput fell 11% to 355,531 TEUs. Containers to and from Yokohama plunged 16.3% to 196,811 TEUs and to and from Nagoya, 19.6% to 186,093 TEUs. Osaka processed 179,175 TEUs, down 7.7%. Those to and from Kobe went down 11.2% to 170,360 TEUs and to and from Kawasaki, 24.2% to 14,938 TEUs.
