South Korea and eight Southeast Asian countries traded a total of 319,800 TEUs of containers in May, which decreased 4.5% from the 334,900 TEUs handled on the route a year earlier, according to statistics compiled by the Korea Customs Service (KCS). South Korea exported 164,000 TEUs, down 8.2%, and imported 159,400 TEUs, down 0.4%. After reaching a peak at 361,900 TEUs in March, overall container throughput on the trade went on a downward trend. In April and May, it declined 12% (40,000 TEUs) in total.

By partner, 98,300 TEUs were moved to and from Vietnam, down 4%; 46,900 TEUs to and from Thailand, down 8%; 36,900 TEUs to and from Taiwan; 33,100 TEUs to and from Malaysia, down 22%; and 13,400 TEUs to and from the Philippines, down 31%. In contrast, containers to and from Indonesia, Hong Kong and Singapore were brisk, growing 17% to 18,400 TEUs; 3% to 31,100 TEUs; and 15% to 21,400 TEUs.
