Oceangoing container throughput at the Port of Osaka (preliminary figures) increased 8% to 193,515 TEUs in April, enjoying the first year-on-year improvement in seven months, or since September 2019.
Increases were registered both exports and imports, which grew 9% to 89,235 TEUs and 7% to 104,280 TEUs, respectively. Focusing on loaded containers, exports plunged 10% to 32,831 TEUs, but imports rose 9% to 101,742 TEUs for a total of 134,573 TEUs, up 4%. Empty containers totaled 58,942 TEUs, up 18%.
In the first four months (January-April), Osaka handled a total of 649,816 TEUs, down 6%. Exports declined 6% to 291,092 TEUs, while imports also shrank 6% to 358,723 TEUs. As for full containers,127,760 TEUs were exported, down 5%, and 349,631 TEUs were imported, down 5%, for a total of 477,390 TEUs, down 5%. Empties amounted to 172,425 TEUs in total, down 9%.
