The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) for Week 23 climbed 0.6% from the previous week to 925.5 points, the Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE) announced recently.

On the route to Europe, some carriers hiked freight rates, lifting spots rates from Shanghai by 2% to $880 per TEU. Transport demand was stable on the trade to the Mediterranean, too, raising fares by 0.8% to $879 per TEU.

On the route to North America, operators imposed extensive service suspensions. Shipments were moved to the west coast at a rate of $2,132 per FEU, up 1.7%, and to the east coast at $2,738 per FEU, up 0.2%.

On the trade to the Middle East, transport demand was week after Ramadan, lowering freight rates by 6.5% to $543 per TEU, whole those to Australia and New Zealand improved 4.1% to $998 per TEU, as local production in these nations was on a mild recovery track.

Demand was sluggish across the board to South America, as the COVID-19 pandemic continue to escalate. Freight rates to the region fell 5.3% to $1,147 per TEU.

Transport demand was stable on the route to Japan. Freight rates to Kansai and Kanto both remained nearly unchanged at $226 per TEU and $238 per TEU, respectively.
