South Korean ports handled a total of 121.84 million tons of shipments in April, down 8.9% from a year earlier, according to preliminary port and harbor statistics compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF). Containers decreased 2.5% from 2.49 million TEUs to 2.34 million TEUs.

Looking more closely at container throughput, exports and imports accounted for 1.39 million TEUs in total, down 3.9%. Shipments to and from China increased 4.2%, but those to and from Japan fell 2.3% and to and from Vietnam, 7%. Transshipment (T/S) containers waned 0.5% to 1.03 million TEUs.

By port, Busan was responsible for 1.82 million TEUs, down 2.4%, and Kwangyang, 180,000 TEUs, down 0.4%. In contrast, Incheon enjoyed growth in container lifting thanks to new services and other reasons, processing 280,000 TEUs, up 0.9%.
