A total of 341,100 TEUs of containers were traded between South Korea and eight economies in Southeast Asia in April, down 1.5% year on year from 346,100 TEUs, according to statistics compiled by the Korea Customs Service (KCS). From a month earlier, there was a decrease of 6%. Exports from South Korea shrank 0.4% to 183,800 TEUs, while imports did not do well, either, falling 2.7% to 157,300 TEUs.
Negative growth was registered in shipments to and from Vietnam, which declined 2% to 103,800 TEUs; to and from Thailand, 1% to 50,000 TEUs; and to and from Malaysia, 1% to 40,800 TEUs. Due to a sweeping lockdown, containers to and from the Philippines plunged 37% to 14,100 TEUs.
In contrast, containers to and from Indonesia, Taiwan and Singapore were brisk, growing 1% to 42,900 TEUs, 6% to 38,300 TEUs and 20% to 22,800 TEUs, respectively.
