Containerized shipments traded from Japan to China plunged 12% to 792,078 tons in March, suffering a year-on-year shrinkage for the 13th consecutive month, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). Decreases were registered primarily in machinery, iron/steel and auto parts/components. In terms of value, they plummeted 15.2% to ¥645.1 billion, incurring a year-on-year decline for four months in a row.

Referring to trade statistics compiled by the Ministry of Finance (MOF), the JMC said that imports from China to Japan, meanwhile, fell 4.5% to 1,723,894 tons, recording a year-on-year decrease for six months running. They were valued at ¥927 billion, down 13.6%, making year-on-year negative growth for nine straight months.

In the first three months (January-March), Japan exported a total of 2,011,937 tons of containerized shipments to China, down 12.4% year on year, while exports from China to Japan only sank 1.8% to 4,507,720 tons.
