The China Containerized Freight Index (CCFI) improved 0.3% from the previous week to 836.64 points in Week 21, the Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE) announced on May 22. On the other hand, the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) declined by a slight 0.3% to 753.41 points.

Spot freight rates from Shanghai (excluding THCs) were $827 per TEU to Europe, down 0.5%; $879 per TEU to the Mediterranean, up 0.7%; $1,678 per FEU to the west coast of North America, down 0.5%; and $2,543 per FEU to the east coast, which remained nearly unchanged.

To the Middle East Gulf, containers were moved at a rate of $618 per TEU, down 6.1%; to Australia and New Zealand, at $937 per TEU, up 0.2%; and to South America, at $930 per TEU, down 6.8%. To Japan, freight rates stood at $228 per TEU to Kansai and $244 per TEU to Kanto, both of which stayed flat from a week earlier.
